World Boxing Federation (WBF) All Africa Welterweight Champion Antonio Mayala successfully retained his title on Friday night, August 30, at the Wynberg Military Base in Cape Town, South Africa.
Originally from Angola but based in Cape Town, Mayala scored a lacklustre split decision over Soweto challenger Onke Duku in the main event of a show promoted by Brice Boxing Promotions.
With two much holding from both parties throughout, referee Eddie Marshall had a busy night trying to keep the fight clean, and many rounds were difficult to score.
After ten messy stanzas, judges Fred Van der Ross and Sipho Ndongeni scored the fight 97-92 and 98-91 for Mayala, while judge Elroy Marshall scored it 95-94 for Duku.
Antonio Mayala improved his professional record to 12-3-1 (6), making his second title-defense. Onke Duku falls to 9-5-2 (5).
